Medial Canthoplasty

I recently adopted an adorable Pug with some special needs. Among some major spinal deformities, he has eye problems. One eye had to be removed. His other had an ulcer that is clearing up. Like many Pugs and other ‘flat faced’ breeds, he has very shallow eye sockets and the remaining eye bulges a lot, increasing it’s risk for further injuries. It also inhibits his ability to fully close the eye when he sleeps, which increases the risk for ulcers.
Before making the decision to adopt him, I did a lot of research on common eye problems and what if anything could be done medically to prevent them.
I found what appears to be a relatively simple surgery with great success rates. Igor will be having it done as soon as he puts on a little more weight. I am super excited for him and for me. I have a deep fear of eyes popping out of their sockets, as I’ve seen it a few times working in a Veterinary clinic.
As groomers we see are always super careful with the Pugs and Shih Tzu that we groom as well. Many of them due to eye problems, are very head shy and struggle for routine grooming of the face.
This link explains the surgery and has a great before and after picture of a Pug that had it done.
I have several clients that I will suggest they discuss this procedure with their Veterinarians.
